SANCTA MARIA AD FONTEM
Via Fontana – Locate di Triulzi (MI)
It’s told that in this place there was in ancient times a little church, nearby the river and for its beauty and for the surrounding nature it has been chosen by residents of Locate Triulzi as a special place of worship for Mother Mary.
The church stands on a land owned by the Trivulzio family from the 15th century and in 1533 it was divested to the Friar servants of Maria. In 1799 the monastery was suppressed and the friars removed, but the ownership of the building and of the adjoining land remained to the Trivulzio.
In 1842 the Princess Cristina of Belgioioso Trivulzio returns the building to the cult without however recalling the servants of Maria. Nowadays it’s important to remember that the church and the annexed buildings are private property of the Cerri family, who bought them in the twenties of the last century.
The current building of St Mary ad Fontem is the result of a series of very complex building works, which make it an interesting example of very complex building works, which make it an interesting example of multilayered architecture, with a rich interior distribution divided into three district levels: the basement with the collection tanks of the water, the lower and the upper church.
